There are true fairy tales, once-upon-a-time stories that exist because of coincidental happenings which change everything. Except in real life, not all of them have the typical, happy-ever-after endings...
This Manhattan tale of laughter and tears charts the love story between two "complicated" dogs, Harry and Minnie, and the gifts of unexpected friendship they gave to their owners, Carol and Martha.
The bonds that grew changed Martha's life, Carol's life, Minnie's life and Harry's life. And they changed Carol's death too.

Description
This is the script of a play first produced in January 1984 at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto.
Set in Toronto's Rosedale district, the work uses realistic characters within a symbol-laden and fantastical plot and structure.
The play has five characters. Cape, the central figure, is a young former lawyer who is suicidal; the play opens with him reflecting on his attempt to end his life and how he is saved by a white dog that sends him a message. The dog's owner, Pony, ends up at Cape's house, a romance ensues and helps serve as the catalyst for the play's central conflicts. Cape lives with his father, Glidden, who is close to death from some kind of disease brought on by his addiction to rolling around in peat moss. Cape believes (according to the message from the white dog) that if he reunites his parents, his father will live. Cape's mother, Lomia, and her much younger boyfriend, Pascal, arrive at Glidden's home after their apartment burns down. What ensues is a fast-paced web of lies built by Cape to bring his parents back together.
Notes
The play was the winner of the 1984 Governor General's Award for Drama.

Synopsis
When a hurricane brings Tompy, a drummer boy to Oz, he meets Yankee, a space dog. In the town of Wackajammy, they learn that they are destined to rescue the missing princess. They soon meet the denizens of Tidy Town, and an idyllic community of “Lanternese” people who have Chinese paper lanterns for heads. On Upandup Mountain, they encounter Jinnicky the Red Jinn, but also a malevolent giant called Badmannah the Terrible!
Notes
Thompson wrote Yankee In Oz in 1959, but found no market and no publisher for another Oz book until 1972 when the International Wizard of Oz Club expressed interest, and published it as an oversized title.
The book was republished again in 2006 (ISBN: 9781930764132).
Dick Martin was responsible for the pictures and James E. Haff for the maps.
Yankee, who can talk, describes himself as follows: "... I'm not pure bull terrier, a bit of springer spaniel is mixed in somewhere in my family which accounts for these freckled ears and my longer legs. But mostly I am bull terrier and bull terriers are TOUGH. That is why they chose me, I expect,..."

Here is a captivating gallery of canine portraits by an artist famous for her dog pictures. Both text and illustrations will delight all who appreciate that dogs are creatures of character, for the accomplished Miss Thorne knows her dogs inside and out, psychologically as well as anatomically, and presents them as amusing and very real personalities. The four-legged heroes and heroines of this book range in size, background and individuality all the way from Jules the Husky, son of Chinook, star of the North, to Sally, popular subdeb of aristocratic Boston, celebrated in rotogravure and society pages. There is Queenie, the cocker spaniel, a veritable vamp of a dog who, it was apparent, intended to go through life taking the line of least resistance; Trix, the Scotch terrier, who found people boring; Growler, a foxhound, who had all the earmarks of a Major retired on half-pay. There is Flush, the matinée-idol cocker-spaniel of "The Barretts of Wimpole Street," blasé from a surfeit of adulation, who yearns for a touch of nature in place of the tinsel and glamour of the footlights. And there is Rogue, the notoriety-seeking fox-terrier, and Teddy, the lovable bull-terrier, and all the rest. Eight full page etchings are reproduced in this volume, and the text is further enlivened by over one hundred line cuts.

DI Clare Mackay is in charge of the high-profile case, and is suspicious of just how devastated Russell's friends really are. The detective can’t help but wonder why no one who knew Russell seems capable of telling the truth, and whether there is more than one person with a reason to want him dead…

When a report comes in that a van containing two prison officers and a convicted jewel thief is missing, the police in St Andrews work quickly to locate the vehicle. No trace is found and doubt sets in about whether they are dealing with corrupt guards springing a felon, or innocent people caught in the crossfire.
DI Clare Mackay has to do without her right-hand man because DS Chris West is related to one of the missing prison officers – his involvement would compromise the case. With a new sergeant at her side plus a previously unencountered DCI, Clare’s people skills are tested. Especially once she realises her new boss is keeping her on the sidelines. When given the choice between keeping secrets from a friend, or letting slip something that could see a culprit go free, which path will she take?

Sometimes that very thin line between illusion and reality is not as clearly defined as we would like it to be. It certainly wasn't the day that Alan Mitz stumbled into the garden of Abdul Gasazi. For in this bizarre and eerie place – where strange topiary trees loomed – the evil visage of Gasazi casts its shadow. And even after Alan escaped, the spell of Gasazi still seemed to penetrate into his everyday world.
In this extraordinary, unusual, and unique picture book, a young artist explores both the real and surreal words with incredible deftness. In doing so, he has created exquisite and beautiful images that will continue to haunt readers longer after they have left the enchanted garden of Abdul Gasazi.

Notes
Alan enters Abdul Gasazi's gardens while chasing Fritz, a white bull terrier, he is babysitting.
This is the first picture book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, creator of Jumanji and The Polar Express.
Fritz appears as a tribute to a bull terrier named Winston, owned by Van Allsburg's brother-in-law.
Fritz appears in all Van Allsburg's books usually 'hidden' as a small detail in an illustration. The Garden Of Abdul Gasazi is only book in which he features prominently.

Maurice Wiggin wrote in The Bookman of David Walder's military first novel Bags of Swank: (He) 'is a Conservative M.P. He may never rise so high in politics as Disraeli, but he writes a livier novel.' The comparison is now even closer as Walder's second novel, The Short List, is concerned with politics. More especially with the first attempts at Disraeli's 'greasy pole' by Rupert Inglis, an Oxford don. Like most dons he has an enquiring mind and he finds it a disadvantage, as it takes him into the ranks of the Stepney Group and thence, almost despite himself, into the lists for the Conservative candidature for Netherford East.
It brings him within observation distance of Spiking the professional, Seneschal the lawyer politician, Floodgate the expert and Lady Inkerman who is alleged to have influence.
At the conferences, adoption meetings and weekend schools these and others of the Party's hierarchy disport themselves. (Readers of Bags of Swank will note with pleasure the re-emergence of Lilburne.) To Inglis's advantage or detriment he is never quite sure.
This is the funniest political novel to be written by a politician for a long time. It would have amused Disraeli but not Gladstone. After all he never wrote novels.

Notes
From the inside back cover: 'Floodgate, who knew about these things, had said that the perfect political aspirant should have a model wife. Failing this a dog was quite good for the image. But, by the time that it mattered, Inglis had lost Juliet and had been landed with a bull-terrier of uncertain temperament called Chamberlain.'
Alan David Walder (1928–1978) was the Conservative MP for High Peak 1961–1966 and for Clitheroe from 1970 until 1978.

From a new voice in American fiction come tales of men whose language is grief, whose off-center lives expose the difficulty of being whole in a world they cannot understand.
Set in the spare, unforgiving landscapes of rural New England and rural Texas, the stories in Good As Any explore the reality of life among the ill, the dying, and the disadvantaged people who seem to exist at the margins. Westmoreland examines individual moments, those times when men create fiction in their lives just to survive. Dark and funny, this debut collection tells wrenching truths about being male and being whole. Reminiscent of the work of Russell Banks, it announces a major new writer of immense talent.
Notes
A collection of eight short stories.
The acutely observed title story (pages 51 to 100) is a both touching and amusing tale about a man who adopts a five-year-old rescue bull terrier and how she takes over his life.

Description
Bow Wow is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Terry Yamamoto. It was serialised in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Big Comic Superior from 1992 to 1999, with its chapters collected in 11 tankōbon volumes.
The series follows Bow, a bull terrier, who starts out as a stray dog, lives with a struggling manga artist for a while, before being adopted by Sayaka, a third grader and the daughter of a yakuza (gangster) family. Initially the father is unwilling to take Bow in, especially as he is extremely accident-prone, but changes his mind after Bow saves the life of his gang's boss.
The rest of the series follows Bow's mishaps with Sayaka, her family (particularly her father, who shares an antagonistic relationship with him) and pets, along with the rest of the neighbourhood.
Notes
A 40-episode anime television series adaptation by Nippon Animation was broadcast on TV Asahi from 1993 to 1994; a short film was also released in 1994.
This is the first of the 11 volumes in the series.
